(February 10th news)
Background: 1607 was the beginning of slavery in the US after English colonists settled in Virginia. Slaves were used as means to use labor to pay costs of their transportation. Slaves were treated badly and forced to work in whatever way the “master” told them to. An average number of slaves owned were 10 per one person. Africans were abducted and brought to the US of those an estimated 645,000 were then slaves. Slavery was abolished in 1865 with the passage of the 13th amendment. After slavery was abolished African Americans were still treated poorly, and segregation then became the new trend. Segregation was then legalized up to the 1960’s. By 1968 all forms of segregation had been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Then in 1926 the first ever “negro history week” took place, years later it evolved into what we know today as “black history month.”
How I feel about it: Attempting to not offend anyone to the best of my ability, black history month shouldn’t exist. Granted, African Americans did a lot for the country we know today, but what about what all the Caucasian, Jewish, Hindu, and Mexican. No one individual ethnic group did anymore for our country than the other, and even if I am wrong about that statement every ethnic group did something. I don’t understand why we must have a “black history month”, and not a white, Mexican, Jewish, so on and so forth. I began to think about it and although I disagree very strongly with the way that blacks were treated I don’t see a point. I know how much they contributed and I know how badly they were treated, but it’s over now move on and accept change. I don’t know why we have to dwell in the past and dedicate an entire month to that of which should be implied just as our white history is.
